Hey Guys,

I was just poking around on my good mate van’s flickr stream and found a pretty nice photo of the illuminated signs above the door to the Tiki Bar.  This may assist you in finding the bar at night.

more-gallery3.jpgHi all,

Just a quick note to let you all know that the best damn Tiki Bar in Australia is having its grand reopening this Saturday following our annual renovation!

MARVEL… At just how orange the stairs to the toilet really are!

DELIGHT… In the exquisite craftsmanship of our newly thatched kitchen hut!

WONDER… When the front door will finally be complete!

Be sure to come down this Australia Day – Saturday 26th from 6pm onwards. Happy Hour 6-7pm – $10 Cocktails!

Cheers, Kev.

Hiya!

green_fairy.jpgJust received an email from the wonderful people at Absinthesalon.com, Australian distributors for some very fine Absinthes from throughout Europe. I have met some of the guys from here, and they are some of the most enthusiastic spirits people I’ve met.

Anyhoo, the email I received pointed to a new blog with a focus on Absinthe – www.absinthe.com.au. I’ve only had a quick poke around, but this place looks like a great source of absinthe reviews of product available in Australia.

The first post on the page at the moment talks about a new Absinthe called “Mansinthe” which just happens to have been commissioned by famed absintheur Marilyn Manson. A few months ago I bought a bottle of Mansinthe after having tried some at the Sydney Bar Show and my verdict is: it’s better than you would expect. As the guys on absinthe.com.au say that you would expect a product of this type to be purely a marketing exercise. Thankfully that is far from the truth. I’ve tried a few absinthes in my time, and this is up there with the better ones.

For those of you think you’d like to partake of the green fairy, I’d suggest starting with the Pernod Absinthe. It’s a really nice place to start. Be sure to steer clear of the Green Fairy absinthe available in Australia, it’s pretty much rocket fuel for the masses and doesn’t really tickle my highly refined palate :D

Cheers,

Kev

For the last couple of years I’ve produced a couple of Podcasts for the world’s first Podcast company “The Podcast Network” run by the unstopable Cameron Reilly.

One of the Podcasts I run is dedicated completely to cocktails, cocktail bars and drink culture, specifically as it relates to the Melbourne bar scene. The show is called “Society for the Orderly Uptake of Spiritously Enhanced Drinks” or SOUSED for short, and can be found at soused.thepodcastnetwork.com.

old-bar1.jpgAll this talk of the current renovation has had me reminiscing about how the bar used to look.

When I first came on board as Bartender almost two years ago, the bar was quite modest. The decor was there, but we certainly had to do a lot of work to get the bar to be the functional high quality cocktail making machine it is now.

Just to put it in perspective, the piece in the first picture used to stand in front of the bottles and it is the bar upon which I used to make drinks.

It’s very cute and retro, and now has pride of place in our “bachelor pad” lounge area near the stairs, but not very functional for cocktails. The first Christmas I worked at Tiki, we closed for renovations, and designed and built the monster bar that now dominates the venue (seen below).

The bar is absolutely magnificent, and functions like a dream. We have two stations, various fridges and freezers, and an extensive list of interesting spirits to play with. The construction of the bar was a turning point for this humble venue, and I still love it to pieces. Dave and Di have done an amazing job of building this place from nothing into the tropical wonderland it is now, and I am grateful that they let me play behind the bar.

Cheers,

Kev

Renovation work on the Tiki Bar rolls on!

The stairs to the toilet (bathroom for American readers with sensitive ears) are now for the most part complete! They have gone from… whatever the hell colour they were before … to a beautiful bright orange – I hesitate to call it “Jetstar Orange”.

This photo demonstrates the new hue of the staircase:

toilet-staircase-renovationmedium2.jpgIn this photo, you can see an excellent handpainted mural which currently lives on the stairs:

You really must visit and see the splendor of the new toilet for yourself. There has been talk of a grand opening, which will most likely include an original sonnet to the staircase composed especially for the event. Not to be missed!

As a reward for reading to the end of this post, here is a photo of our resident dish-pig helping out with the painting. Note, this is the outfit he normally wears when washing dishes – it’s necessary for the alcohol fumes and citrus acid :D

Hey there!

It occurs to me that some people who stumble across this blog may be travelers searching for things to do while in Melbourne. If you’ve come here because you’re in to Tiki, cocktails or sub-culture, I thought I could help out with some helpful pointers for getting the most from your visit.

Cocktails and Bars

bar-secrets-grab-jpg.jpgOk first of all, you absolutely must find a bookshop and arm yourself with a copy of Deck of Secrets‘ “Bar Secrets: Melbourne” and “Bar Secrets: Melbourne City Fringe”. These sell for under $10 each, and have 52 cards, each with a review, contact details and map for some of Melbourne’s nicer bars. Be warned that many of Melbourne’s bars are hidden away – it’s often quite a hunt to find the obscure alleyways where we hide our best venues.

Some of my picks for Melbourne Cocktail bars are:

1806 – A new bar run by Sebastian Reaburn, Melbourne’s mad scientist of Cocktails, and an avid drinks Historian. Seb is a veritable font of knowledge, and the drinks at 1806 are a testament to this (the name of the bar is a reference to the first written definition of the cocktail in the year 1806 – definitely a place for cocktail nerds like me).

Seamstress – Melbourne’s bartending dream team works at this new bar in Lonsdale Street. Headed up by Jason Chan, who has a knack for hunting down obscure and exotic spirits, Seamstress is a must-see bar.

Der Raum – world renowned cocktail bar doing lots of innovative “molecular mixology” stuff.

Golden Monkey – Asian inspired drinks and decor with ever-friendly staff, the Monkey has been the darling of the Melbourne bar scene for the last two years or so.

Murmur – Very low key “cuban-style” bar – this is a typically Melbourne Alleyway bar. Look for the giant chandelier in the alley.

Ginger – Head off the beaten track a little to Brunswick Street a bit north of the city, and you will find Ginger – a progressive cocktail bar with a great friendly atmosphere. After 3 visits, you’re practically family thanks to the most awesome hospitality of Alex Ross and her crew.

Tiki Lounge and Bar – Hands down the best bar in Melbourne.   Exquisite drinks and impeccable hospitality are the hallmarks of this behemoth of the Melbourne Cocktail scene.  Plus, their head bartender is smoking hot.

Subculture:

Tiki seems to attract a lot of attention from the low brow art community and pop culture enthusiasts. Here are a few people in Melbourne who are doing their best to further the cause…

Outre Gallery – Lots of lowbrow art and artists – Shag, kozyndan, Niagara and many others, Outre is the place for Tiki artwork and books.

Route 66 – Clothing store specialising in rockabilly type styling, Route 66 often play host to bands in their Prahran store. Great people and strong supporters of Tiki Lounge and Bar.

There are a number of Burlesque troops floating around in Melbourne. Off the top of my head we’ve got HiBall Burlesque, The Town Bikes and Man’s Ruin (who I can’t find a site for after 30 seconds of intense googling.) They’re all well worth checking out.

I’m sure I’ve missed some vital stuff out – please feel free to drop a note in the comments if you’ve got anything to add.

Cheers,

Kev.

 Psychotronic encyclopedia of film

Good Morning Internam!

Following an email from a gent by the name of Matt, I have become aware of an interesting pop-culture/lowbrow art blog called “Eye of the Goof”. Matt was planning to visit Tiki whilst in Australia, but sadly we will be closed
(for renovations) while he’s down here. Next time, Matt!

Anyway, Eye of the Goof seems like the kinda place that would appeal to our customers , so I thought I’d pop a link up here. One post in particular caught my eye – “The Psychotronic Guide to Archive.org“. Psychotronic is a sort of classification for films that were low-budget quirky b-grade type affairs. Because everything on archive.org is either royalty-free or creative-commons licensed, so we can happily show these filmic gems on our brand new projector when it is installed!

I hope to see a schedule of films appear at some stage this year featuring some of the films listed in the above links.

Cheers,

Kev

Be aware, Tikiphiles, that we’ve been working our fingers to the bone to improve the journey experienced on the way to the toilet.  Here is a photo of the stairwell during a recent alien invasion:

Cauldron

Hello there!

My name’s Kev and I am the Chief Bartender at Tiki Lounge and Bar – the only operating classic Tiki bar in Melbourne (that’s in Australia – I have no doubt there are Tiki bars in Melbourne, Florida).

This here blog site will be the online home of Tiki Lounge and Bar.  The website was kindly constructed and beautifully designed by friend of the bar Mike “van” Stevens whose excellent work can be seen at his portfolio site – if you find yourself in need of some illustratin’ or some designin’, his work is some of the best. Over the years I’ve managed to brainwash indoctrinate him in the world of Tiki and he is responsible for our most excellent logo graphic – seen here on a sign taken on a crappy phone camera before the sign was installed:

tiki-sign-not-installed.jpg

Anyway, enough ego stroking there, van gets far too much of that from me as it is. We’ll be fleshing out this blog over the coming weeks with more juicy Tiki stuff and explaining a little more about what it is we do. Don’t forget to check out our MySpace page and befriend us there or whatever else it is the trendy kids are doing these day, and be sure to drop into the bar!

Cheers,

Cocktail Kev
